The phenomenally talented Pedro Pablo “Pedríto” Martínez began his musical career at age 11 in the Cayo Hueso neighborhood of Havana, Cuba, steeped in the rumba and Afro-Cuban Yoruba traditions.

A consummate master of Afro-Cuban folkloric music and the batá drum, Pedrito has performed with Paul Simon, Wynton Marsalis, Paquito D’Rivera, Bruce Springsteen, Ruben Blades, Eddie Palmieri, Dave Matthews, Eric Clapton, Camila Cabello and Sting, and has contributed to over 75 albums. He was a founding member of the highly successful band Yerba Buena before founding the Pedrito Martínez Group in 2005. Their first, self-titled studio album was released in 2013, was nominated for a Grammy, and was among NPR’s Favorite Albums and The Boston Globe Critics’ Top Ten Albums of the year. Pedrito himself has been awarded Percussionist of the Year by Jazz Times Magazine and been named seven times as Jazz Percussionist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association.

“Pedrito is a genius … Working with him has been a revelation to me.” — Wynton Marsalis

“The Pedrito Martínez Group is the real thing. They had the club JUMPING! It made me feel like a teenager!” — Quincy Jones
